Oregon CNA Program Basics

In Oregon, residents may take an approved training course in order to sit for the state’s final CNA1 exam. Find training programs using the map above or the links below. As with most states, the CNA training program must meet or exceed the federal governments recommendation of 70 hours that includes both annual skills instruction (clinicals) and classroom. At the end of the course, a student may sit for the CNA1 exam.

Oregon CNA Examination Information

The final exam may be taken after the state’s nursing board approves an application for one of the situations described above or after a training course is completed. The final exam has a multiple-choice portion and a manual skills assessment. During the manual skills portion, the student will perform five skills on actors under the supervision of the test administrator. Failure to pass either section of the exam will result in certification being withheld until the student takes the exam again and passes. Failure to pass the entire exam with three tries requires that the student retake training.

Oregon CNA Certification Reciprocity

All applicants must have and pass a criminal background check. Those aides that wish to transfer their certification into Oregon from another state must have a background check and must provide proof that they have worked at least 400 hours in the past two years as a CNA with a certificate in good standing and that those 400 hours were under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The training that the CNA completed to become certified in their home state must comply with Oregon’s standards as well. Any convictions of neglect or abuse will automatically disqualify applicants from being endorsed into Oregon certification.

Oregon CNA Certification Renewal

Oregon has stricter rules than some other states for renewal of certification. Every twenty-four months, on the day before the aide’s birthday, their certification expires. During these two years, to qualify for renewal, the aide must have worked a minimum of 400 hour (or 3 months) in a for pay setting. This includes caring for family members only if the care was paid and recorded. Re-certification costs for a CNA are about $60.
