South Dakota State Requirements for CNAs

New candidates for CNA in South Dakota must undergo a minimum of 75 hours of classes at a state-approved program. A part of these 75 hours is 16 hours of clinical instruction. State approved programs are available around the state. For those candidates that have special circumstances, there are specific criteria for:

Lapsed CNA status: Those that have previously been granted listing in the CNA registry but had their active registry status lapse may re-apply for listing on the registry. Two requirements must be in place for this: A minimum of 12 hours of classes per year, and a minimum of 12 hours of employment as a nurse aide for monetary compensation during the preceding 24 months.

CNA Waiver of Training/ Equivalency of Training: Those candidates who have completed fundamentals in nursing courses (grade C or better) at an approved South Dakota nursing education program may apply for a waiver to take the CNA exam without taking the minimum 75 hours of state-approved classes.

Interstate approval: Those candidates who are certified in another state may apply for the CNA registry if they apply and complete the CNA Interstate Endorsement Application.

South Dakota CNA Exam Details

The South Dakota Nursing Assistant Test is administered by D & S Diversified Technologies/Headmaster LLP. The test is consists of two sections – written and skills. The knowledge/oral section of the exam is 75 questions. Candidates will have 90 minutes to complete this knowledge section. The second section is the Skills Test. Candidates have 30 minutes to complete 3 to 4 skills, depending on the skills tested. Details on the exam are available here.
