Missouri State Requirements for CNAs
Nurse aide candidates must take an approved CNA course. This consists of 75 hours of classroom learning and 100 hours of on-the-job learning. Once this is completed, candidates are eligible to take the CNA examination. Upon successfully passing the exam, candidates can apply to be listed on the state registry.
Candidates may apply to automatically take the CNA exam without 175 hours of coursework and hands-on learning by taking a challenge path. They may take a challenge path if they fall under the following criteria with the proper documentation:
- Individuals who are currently enrolled in an RN or LPN program and have taken a Fundamentals of Nursing course
- RN or LPN candidates who have failed the state license exam
- Individuals who are active on another state’s CNA registry
- Students who have completed a nursing program outside the U.S. and are awaiting their license
- Candidates who trained in a long-term care unit outside of a hospital
- Those that have had a background or education in gerontology and health occupations
- Those listed on the Missouri State Certified Nurse Assistant Register holding an inactive status
- Individuals trained in acute care areas of hospitals as nursing assistants or as psychiatric aides.
