In the state of Kentucky, nurse aides are formally referred to and listed in the Kentucky CNA Registry as State Registered Nurse Aides. The Registry lists the status of State Registered Nurse Aide. In Kentucky, individuals who wish to work as nurse aides must maintain an active status with the KNAR.

How to Become a NEW SRNA (State Registered Nurse Aide) in Kentucky

The first step is to enroll in and complete successfully a CNA program for nurse aides approved by the state of Kentucky. Next, you must take and pass the competency evaluation – both clinical and written exams – which is administered by Kentucky Technical and Community College.

Your testing scores will be sent to the KNAR, which adds your name to their list of active SRNAs. Once you are listed in the KNAR as active, you are eligible for employment. A complete list of approved CNA program providers may be obtained from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services at (502) 564-6890.

Registration Renewal for Kentucky Nurse Aides

Nurse aides’ status remains active for 2 years before it needs to be renewed. The date of the renewal is the date of passing the nurse aide examination. To maintain an active status on the KNAR, nurse aides must perform at least 8 hours of paid nursing-related services in each 24-month registration period. Two months before your registration is due to expire, you will be mailed a renewal notification.

Information on Registration Renewal

Reinstatement of a Lapsed SRNA Registration

If you cannot provide proof of performing 8 hours of paid work in a nursing-related capacity in the last 24-month registration period, you must retake and pass the competency exam. You can, however, still apply for renewal if your registration has expired but you have performed the required 8 hours of paid nursing-related services.

Out-of-state CNA Certification Transfer

Nurse aides who are listed in good standing and active in another state may apply for registration with the KNAR. However, nurse aides whose status is not current in their home state’s registry, must retrain and retake the competency evaluation for acceptance into the CNA registry in Kentucky.
