The District of Columbia CNA Registry is managed by Credentia that also administers the National Nursing Assistant Assessment Program (NNAAP) competency examination. There are three steps to becoming a new Certified Nurse Aide in Washington, DC:
- Identify a DC approved CNA program.
- Apply and complete training.
- Pass the NNAAP competency exam.

Employers can search the CNA registry in Washington DC to verify certification for a CNA.
DC Nurse Aides Certification Renewal
In DC, CNAs must renew their certificates every 24 months. They must fill out a renewal form and meet the following criteria:
- 8 hours of paid nursing-related services within an active certificate
- 24 hours of continuing education within an active certificate
What to Do about Expired Certification?
- Certificate that is expired less than 24 months: take and pass exam and apply for certification.
- Certificate that is expired more than 24 months: complete state-approved training, take and pass exam, and apply for certification

CNA Certification Transfer from Another State
A nursing assistant from another state, must have a current certificate in good standing in the state of certification. They must apply for certification by endorsement and will be listed on the DC Nurse Aide Registry after meeting the requirements.
