Minnesota State Requirements for CNAs

Nurse aides may be listed on the CNA Minnesota Registry they have completed a nurse aide training program and passed the nurse aide assessment exam.  Candidates may begin working as nurse aide assistants right away as long as they are enrolled in a state-approved nurse aide training program.

Candidates who wish to not attend a nurse aide training program may take the challenge path. If they pass the nurse aide assessment exam, they may be eligible to work and be listed on the CNA Registry.

There a 5 different curriculums for nurse aide training in Minnesota, with the two most common tracks being the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the Red Cross.  Both have 75 hours of total instruction, consisting of16 hours of clinical instruction. The other three tracks are the Health Care Core Curriculum/Skills Set, 6th Edition of the American Health Care Association’s (AHCA) “HOW TO BE A NURSE ASSISTANT” curriculum, and the OnTrack Nursing Assistant Training program.

Minnesota CNA Exam Details

Candidates in Minnesota take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Exam. The exam has It has two parts, a 60 question multiple choice test, which must be completed in a 2-hour time frame.  The clinical skills section requires the demonstration of a collection of sample clinical CNA skills and is generally a day-long exam.
